Default A question for the Air rifle guys

    Hi guys,

I stumbled upon a old BSA meteor air rifle, that I want to spice up a bit.

What scope mount would you suggest?

My Brother has the same rifle, and his moves around allot due to the excessive spring force when shooting.

    Thanks in advance.

    I really wouldnt bother

Its a real nice gun to shoot iron sights with.

If you have to, have a look at the Gamo and N Stirling Scopes.

Spend a bit extra on decent mounts.

I have a spare scope arrester block you can have that helps preventing the mount from moving

    Hi yeti,

thanks, what is a scope arrester block?

if it helps the scope stay stationary then this is what i am looking for.

A scope is normally mounted on the body and with those old rifles, there's no guarantee the barrel locks in the same position every time. Hence open sights are barrel mounted and sometimes are actually more consistently accurate.

Interesting, what about a picatini rail? surely that would stop the movement?
Good luck, it is a wonderful air rifle

My brother has a picatini rail iirc, and it moves after a couple of shots.

It has real nice iron sights on, agreed, but I want to add a scope for various reasons:
    1. To take out doves, as quickly and painlessly as possible
    2. cheap alternative for large rifle practice, and I can do it in the comfort of my own home.

any of you have experience on taking out and putting back the main spring.

From what I have gathered, it seems like a bitch to do...

    Hi Mackie

To be honest with you, spending any money and time on an old rifle is counterproductive, unless from a collector's POV.
You will be sorely disappointed with anything you think you may learn from the rifle as part of a CF training regimen. The trigger is nowhere near adequate, and in all my years of shooting and owning BSA Meteors (I have owned 3 in my lifetime), I have yet to successfully mount a scope that (in conjunction with the rifle) could deliver any form of consistency in accuracy.
My take would be to buy a good quality modern spring gun for all your requirements - esp. when you mention aiming it at beasties. ANY form of hunting/PC done with an air rifle should be considered from a 'single shot kill' perspective, with a confidence level of 100%. Anything else would be considered schoolboy-cruel.

As an illustration... You probably will not be able to hold a 10 shot group inside 50mm with the BSA at an average hunting distance (with an airgun) of say 25-30m.
If you consider the size of a dove's skull (20-25mm?) I would estimate that you then have at least a 30mm (60%) possibility of a clean miss or a beakshot - simply the cruelest thing ever. Obviously the odds of a 'hit' are amplified with a body shot, but that is another scenario altogether.

Now consider the odds with a top-quality gun. If you are a half decent shot, you would (should) be able to put 10 pellets into a 20mm ring at 25m... consistently. Your potential cruelty level drops through the floor - and explaining away the screeching bird to your now wide-eyed, bawling son as 'part of hunting' is no longer an issue.

You will also learn more IRT trigger technique and follow trough, due to a closer similarity to CF.

    Just my 2 cents.
