Deep sea fishing, St Lucia
I'll be in St Lucia the second part of December.
I've never been on the deep sea, and I want to eat something that I caught.
Can anyone recommend an affordable charter?
I say affordable because if it turns out that I get violently sea-sick, it must not be the most expensive puking session ever.

I am from the PE and J-Bay region so don't know up that side....but what I can offer is this. The more expensive guys have their act together, and because of their rates are less likely to skimp on running costs on their vessels from engine maintenance to safety and radio equipment etc....and while boats running into trouble offshore is a rarity it does happen and last thing I would want is for your "last regret ever" to be "I should have just paid more"....

You don't know if you get sea-sick?

No. Apparently it cannot be compared to air-sickness? I've never experienced motion sickness in my life, and I've been in some fairly turbulent airplanes, and I can read a book in a car without feeling sick. So I thought I should be fine, but from hearing from others I may be wrong.

Re: Deep sea fishing, St Lucia
As a person who suffers motion sickness (note, not air or sea) they are the same. Motion sickness is a function of the inner ear and excessive multi-axis motion creates havoc. The difference with the sea is that if you go game fishing then you will be trawling and the lateral movement of the boat is for the most part almost cancelled out so very much like a plane.
When you sit an bottom fish, most common, then the boat moves in everyway possible as it floats in the water, so from that point it is worse that air travel.
For me, I remain a human fish chummer. One too many wasted sunsets and one too many for the road .........

An old skipper I knew, always recommended that a first timer, who did not know how the motion might affect them, should make sure to have a good couple of nights sleep before going to sea, not have a big "fatty" type of meal the night before, limit the amount of dairy for breakfast on the day, take motion sickness tablets if you really want to (he felt it would not be necessary) and finally to eat while on board the vessel.
This advice is what he would give first time "day trippers" going out on his boat from Kalk Bay.

Skaap, give me a day or two and ill find out what tablets I took. I suffer from bad sea sickness and the last time I went deep sea fishing I took some tablets 30 min before getting on the boat and I was completely fine.
