They don't even fly - they simply run away. And my little boy is always with me so the exclamations have to stay civil in some manner.

Something like: "Genugtig, daar vertrek die tarentale."

To avoid teaching the youngsters some choice military vocabluary, may I make a few suggestion?
    1. Try to tension the circular spring by prying it off and giving it a little squeeze in the bench vice. Do not overdo this, as a kink in the spring will weaken and ruin it.
    2. Carefully polish the chamber with some 1200+ grit waterpaper wrapped around a suitable dowel and driven by hand drill. Use lots of "spookpiepie" or similar fluid.
    3. Just clean the chamber from the rear, without cleaning the barrel.

22 Rimfires are notorious for poor accuracy after proper cleaning.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate it and will try all of the above.

How long will the barrel be after cutting it off behind the bulge?

There is very little benefit gained from a barrel longer than 12 inches in .22Lr

Current barrel length is 21", cut-off length would be 15".

15" will be more than enough. I would go shorter and add a silencer

Yup, that is what I plan, but who would believe that a ds out in the field with a shortened, silenced .22 is merely looking for some guineafowl to feed the poor?

Ds J, just confirm in the FCA, but IIRC there are limits to "how much" of a barrel a gunsmith may remove without CFR approval. Something in the back of my mind says 2"? Again, I think it's one of those close-to-unenforceable rules, but just confirm before you sommer lob a whole chunk off the end....
