Nikon Sporter or Monarch. 10 X 42 definitely. Weight? You won't have a problem with any of those but I suggest a Bushnell bino harness. Especially for hunting, prevents flapping around and promotes easy transfer of hands from bino to rifle.

I have a pair of Minox 10x42 roof prisms I use when hunting. Very happy with their glass. Ruberised exterior so does not easily show up all the little nicks and bumps you tend to pick up in the bush also quieter if you bump them against something metallic. As Nashtims mentioned above, a bino harness helps a lot , although I have found when shouldering a rifle in a awkward position the binos can still get in the way. I picked them up about 2 years ago for about R 2,600 on special from iwarehouse. They have adjustable eye cups which twist out so you can get the right eye relief for you and have flip off dust caps on the objective lenses to help keep out the dust. All in all I find they punch above their weight (price) and would definitely recommend them.

I have a pair of Swarovski 10x40 EL if anyone is interested. This model is not made any longer, and priced accordingly.

Nikon Monarch 10x42 is great value for money. I have been using one daily, for more than two years, and have had no problems.

Should fall nicely within that budget.

For hunting the 10 is good, for birding the 8 is preferable.
    couldn't agree more , I use the Monarch 7's , they are fantastic !
I would even go as far as saying that value for money nothing comes close !

my wife bought them for me as a gift , I think the Monarch 7's were around R7k at the time (I am not sure ) , however there weight , optics , size and price makes them my first choice .
