Default New specialist units for SAPS

    http://www.politicsweb.co.za/news-an...-his-sona-2016

JZ State of the nation address 2016 in reply:

"Still on the security issues, I would also like to announce two new developments in the South African Police Service.

As part of the Back to Basics strategy, the Ministry of Police will establish special units to deal with drugs and related transnational crimes as well as violence and proliferation of firearms in our society.

The two units are the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and the National Bureau for Illegal Firearms Control and Priority Violent Crime. The units will fall under the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) commonly known as Hawks."

    Some thoughts:

    1. Drugs is a major driver of crime so it is good that there will be a renewed focus.
    2. For how many years have those in the know requested the re-establishment of specialist units, and why only now are they making a comeback?
    3. Let's hope that the firearms unit's attention is not directed to the harassment of the law abiding class...

The US "war on drugs" has been a costly and pointless exercise.

Well I support these efforts, how much will come of it we will have to see. But yea, I really hope they focus on the criminal element and not start to target legal gun owners for the sake of "look we are doing something".

But with all new stationary. Cooler titles. And more government oversight.

I bet if one goes through the histories of Hitler, Mao, Stalin and the soviet republics one would find similar "Bureaus for the protection of the people against illegal firearms".

They just out right banned them.

Well we need guys to sniff out the old arms caches, the syndicates dealing in firearms, the black market importers ex. I think its a good thing to have a unit dedicated to this.

I really don't mind honest policemen doing specialist jobs in service of the country. I do mind it that legal gun owners might become targets of ill intent and malpractice, much like some of the Joburg Metro police have been abusing their privileges.

I do not really see the point I units targeting the tools/goods of the criminals.
Makes more sense reinstating the gang unit in SAPS and have a unit in the Hawks dealing in cross border syndicates.
