My point might be detracting from OP, but these things happen so fast, very very fast. I said it prior, but very few peeps can react and respond the "correct" way during such an event. Your senses are overloaded, par none. One of two things happen:
    - you quiver and scamper for safety – but even that is not a too analytical knee-jerk reaction, your mind says GET OUT/AWAY!
    - you are morbidly intrigued by the action and you freeze and observe.
    - a select few might have the clarity of mind to assess and engage.

Ideally, we need to be prepped and ready. I believe that is where the mil-conditioning (of old) is very successful. Unfortunately very few of “us” today have this background or have remained trained and conditioned.

This brings me to my point (I’ll post another thread on this though), who has actually been in a gun altercation. Care to share what you were feeling and how you responded?

I was there too, was in Strijdom park when I heard the shots. Must have just missed it but saw the perps tied up on the highway on my way back. Hectic stuff

You will see that neither of us mentioned pulling out our EDC, we were talking about cover and escape.
Probably because we're smart like that.

I first though it was a cash in transit attempt as the van and security guards were assisting too.

The cops that were on scene were those mean looking dudes with the berets. Would hate to be on the wrong side if them.

You will find most who have aren't super keen to share war stories on the inter webs.

True, and others again might just relay their Counter Strike endeavors.

Yah... I never even remotely suggested that he should pull out his gun.

But no surprise, because people have lost the art of comprehension, even when they have in fact read something in it's entirety.

I'm happy to share my typical reactions rather than details of an altercation. I tend to stop, observe and contemplate my options.
It's usually after the fact that I have to remind myself that my number one responsibility is to my family. Avoid doesn't come naturally to me, I'm working hard on it.
