Re: Hunting knife
If you are looking for a good Buck hunting knife:
http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/BU0537RWS/buck-537-open-season-skinner-fixed-s30v-blade-rosewood-dymondwood-handles
Just beware, although it will hold an edge very well, S30V is an absolute bitch to sharpen.
Another option:
http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/BU6...s-nylon-sheath
This is a really nice working knife with fair to good edge retention. The 420 steel is easy to sharpen.
I own two of the S30V Open Season knives, the one mentioned in the first link and then the boning knife in the series. Both knives are of very good quality and have excellent edge retention properties. As mentioned they take a long time to sharpen with conventional stones but using a WorkSharp electric sharpener makes it a non-issue. I find myself using the boning knife for all sorts of chores as a really handy, albeit ugly knife.
I also own the Rosewood handled version of the knife in the second link. It can take quite a beating and was used as the "camp" knife on a 5 day hunt last year. During this period it was used for chopping onions on a granite surface, as a steak knife for meat served in a cast iron plate, cutting cheese, meat etc. i.e. it was badly abused. The edge retained some sharpness and wasn't damaged or chipped. Back home it took about 10 minutes on the Lansky to get back into shape and very sharp.

Re: Hunting knife
My very old but trusted Bowie Knife. It belonged to my dad for many years and he handed it over to me on one of our hunting trips (when I turned 18).
It holds an edge unbelievably well but is still very easy to sharpen (I use a Lansky set on all my knives). No idea of what steal it's made from.

I bought a dedicated guthook from Takealot. It's nothing exciting to look at but it's a practical tool

Re: Hunting knife
I use a Kershaw Lonerock fixed blade... https://kershaw.kaiusaltd.com/knives...fixed-gut-hook
It has served me well so far, but I am NOT a PH, and do not use the knife daily, only when hunting, couple of days a year...

Re: Hunting knife
I have one of these babies - a CRKT Free Range Hunter Drop Point fixed blade with gut hook.
Does what it says on the bottle. And at R600ish if you lose it you won't want to commit suicide. Knives are consumables, especially working knives.
