    Good day all,

Please bring slings for your shotguns and rifles if you have. This will be useful in some of the training exercises.

    It rained; we trained!

It was one of the wettest and coldest training sessions we had experienced in a long time.

    (January was wet BUT warm)
Everyone was thoroughly soaked and cold by the time we left.

As I type my gear lies in a soggy heap waiting to be sorted.

Newy was the co-coordinator for this training session, assisted by Plaashaas.

After the standard prayer and briefing we ventured into the rain for a Level 1, DickDeKock selflessly volunteered to stay in the club house and do the admin & comms for the L1.

There were 6 attendees to qualify for the L1 and for those who had qualified already it was an opportunity to blow out the cobwebs.

Personally I prefer the cooler & wet weather is preferable to the heat when doing physical exertion.

For those who do not know what an L1 is, the participant is required to get 10 hits on a paper plate (230mm Diameter) @ 100m after completing a hike of 3.4 km within 40 min, whilst carrying rifle some gear and water

    Official L1 results
    Name Rifle/Sights Cal Hike Shots Fired/Hits Pass/Fail
    Staffy CQA/RDS .223 32 25:2 + 15:8 (40/10) P
    Pesvis DMS/RDS .223 33 29:3+15:3(44/6) F
    S.V Lever action/Scope .22lr 35 14:1+6:0 (20/1) F
    S.L ??AR/RDS .223 38 30:3+ 15:2 (45/5) F
    G.P Lee Enfield/Scope 303BR 38 10:3 + 0:0 (10/3) F
    Titanium 15-22/Scope .22lr 40 10:2+10:0(20/2) F

Regrettably the scale that we use to weigh our gear was missing (along with tea/coffee/sugar: Horrors! ) because of the burglary we had this year.

Some of the re-qualifiers were long time members and had been unable to attend due to Injury, work etc.

However even they were found to be wanting in the shooting department.

The lesson learnt is that shooting skills have the shelf life of a banana.

You are only as good as your last shoot. I found this out the hard way in March when I failed the shooting at Mpumalanga and had to do the 100m dash to make up for it.

    Unofficial results

    Name Rifle/Sights Cal Hike Shots Fired/Hits Pass/Fail
    Newy 30M1/Iron? 7.62x35 27 ?:?+21:10 P
    Grant9 Glock 17/Iron 9mm 31 ?:? F
    Boomslang Mini14/Iron .223 32 35:4+15:5 (50/9) F
    Camo NEA14.5/Scope .223 35 24/13 P

Thereafter it was decided to do the rifle cleaning in the clubhouse, it is neither practical nor realistic to clean rifles in the rain.

Whilst the blokes were doing the rifle cleaning, Box brewed up a kettle for some tea.

This was followed by some handgun and shotgun drills.

By 12h00 we were all thoroughly soaked and some blokes had some serious shivers.

Fortunately there is a local Coffee shop nearby with a fireplace.

Thanks again to Newy and Plaashaas for running a safe training session in abysmal conditions.

Special mention to Titanium for trying out for the L1 despite having some serious and uncomfortable issues with walking.

Also to Plaashaas who got gassed (again) by our alarm system. We really need to get the batteries sorted.
