Durban - Three suspected carjackers died in a hail of bullets during a confrontation with police in Wentworth, Durban, on Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said the provincial vehicle task team had responded to a report that a gold-coloured Mercedes Benz had been hijacked in Merebank, and had thrown a wide net in their search for the suspects.

Magudulela said the responding officers were led on a high-speed chase through Merebank and along a section of freeway towards the Bluff.

Members of the task team spotted the vehicle and gave chase along M4 Inkosi Albert Luthuli southern freeway, Old South Coast Road and onto Rana Road.

“Shots were fired at the police and the suspects tried to run members off the road, he said.
"The members returned fire and the suspects crashed the vehicle. The three suspects, all armed, got out of the vehicle while still firing at the officers.
"All three were fatally shot and killed. Three firearms were recovered,” Magudulela said.
