Re: South African Medican Journal article
It seems this research only looks at gunshot deaths and ignores all other forms of death / homicide.
One would expect them to concentrate on homicide, as the gun debate is supposed to scare us into believing we're safer without them.
Are suicides affected, is homicide affected?
So from crimestatssa.com, the raw homicide numbers from 2004 to 2015 are as follows:
19824
18793 -1031
18545 -248
19202 +657
18487 -715
18148 -339
16834 -1314
15940 -894
15609 -331
16211 +602
16914 +703
17805 +891
If you want to play with numbers, the net change is -2019. According to GFSA, this can be ascribed solely to the FCA. I note there is no analysis of crime trends, areas where the homicides occurred and probable assailants - i.e. are the assailants the kind of people affected by gun laws - do they even bother or are they so priced out of the market they could never have complied?
Further, account has to be taken of the massive leakage of firearms into illegal pools following the amnesties as well as by SAPS/Military. So clearly amnesties cannot be credited with anything.
We also need to know if the CFR has been of any use in the resolution of any criminal matter - particularly homicide. Was a case of homicide ever solved because of the intervention of the CFR?
There are sooooooo many holes in this research I have to say it looks vulnerable to the label " junk science"
