At this rate we are going to lose our modern sporting rifles licensed for sport.

If the rifle is licensed in terms of section 14, for purposes of self defense, there can be no issue whatsoever.

And frankly, if the intended use is to be for this purpose, it should be mentioned in the license application.

This will remain a sensitive topic, so yes, let's rather leave it at that.

From early experience at family farm in Rhodesia, this is not the best type of FA to patrol outside at night. It's too easy to hit distant objects in the dark, like tractors, chicken sheds , labour accommodation, etc. In addition their is a tendency to shoot high at night. A 12 gauge semi or pump action shotgun is more suited to the type of short-range, moving combat you may anticipate.

This platform is best suited for what the OP is intending. Shotgun for for extreme close quarters, but AR had advantage of easier to load, lots extra mags and Ammo. Besides you can't put that many tactical shit on a shottie.
Can you substantiate the tendency to shoot high at night? As its Most SF teams preferred weapon it's a good choice IMO.

At night one tends to try and look over sights at target, rather than through, with foresight being hard to center. Results in rear sight being lower in the shoulder and strikes high. It's good to practice shoot at a 210 L drum at night at 80 m and see just where you hit. SF teams will train for this, but also operate in teams. As I understood it, the OP intends operating alone?

Would that still be the case if there's a group of 10 BG waiting in the bushes?
