Can't wait to see it. And good job on this little guy, really really nice knife. Like a little tactical cleaver.

K 460 is basically Bohler Uddelholm's version of O1 tool. Very forgiving and hardening and tempering can be done at home. Hardening 780 - 820 deg/cel. Tempering 100-300 deg/cel. Oil quench. Hardness that can be obtained 63 - 65 Rockwell.

Knife makers usually refer to N690 as tool steel.
Polishes well and holds a good edge.
Stupid question here, would one not be able to heat treat a blade by chucking it into one of those olden days coal stoves or anthracite heaters?

I'm not aware of that. I thought D2 etc was tool steel. I guess you learn something every day

I tried that and had very mixed results. It's because you can't accurately control your temperature. Some steels will work ok like that, others you will ruin. One knife that I made and treated became very hard, but then when I tried the temper it went soft again. Leave it to Bohler etc to treat it. They know what they are doing.

So Manny's suggestions had me play with the basic handle and blade design and I think this will be knife number 2 in a couple of days.

I think your onto something there Erebus! If your making it the same size as the first one, it will make a nice little sd blade. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

The blade is about 1 cm longer than the cleaver, total length is 12.5cm
