I've seen a guy who took a .22 in the chest, Right hand side.
He staggered 10m and dropped dead. Not sure of the ammo used.
So that being said, a .22 is better than nothing.

Agree with SSP. Solid High Velocity should do the trick

the 22lr is a good caliber of choice for a small self defence pistol. Have much better penetration than a .25ACP and ammo is cheap for practise. Recoil is a + for people who are afraid. The most important thing if you go that route is to ensure you have a quality and reliable 22. You must also learn to handle this firearm with confidence and must have multiple shot placement to the chest area.

    IIRC
Col Jeff Cooper advocated the .22lr for use in taking out rioters with lung shots. Specifically taking out the chief agitator, the dude could then be recovered, patched up & sent to prison.
Recent studies show that 1 out of every 3 liberals are just as dumb as the other 2

But I'm waiting for my SD license, for an old thing I inherited. Now I'm in the market for a decent new pistol, and I'm wondering if I should apply already for a new SD license and cancel the first which is still in process, if that's even possible.
DON'T CANCEL your sd app!! Rather get a second pistol, the likes of a Glock 19/S&W M&P 9 and license it under section 15 (occasional sport/hunting use).

    Then get practicing!

I've got a 22LR Browning target pistol and when clean it is very reliable. You can put 11 rounds on target REALLY quickly and VERY accurately with minimal recoil. This is a full size pistol though.

+1 on solid high velocity bullets. In a "self defence" 22LR I'd go for ammo that is clean and wont gunk up the firing pin channel, action, etc. The Swartklip I have now is covered with some sort of wax that eventually causes failures.
