Default .303 to 7,62×39 calibre conversion.

I hope I am at the right section now ;-).Are there gunsmiths or engineering firms that do calibre conversions in South Africa.I own a Lee Enfield No 1 Mk 3 which I would like to convert to 7,62×39 .Any advice would be appreciated.

Why would you want to desecrate a Lee Enfield in such a manner?

For starters you'd need a new barrel at the very least. The 303 chamber is substantially longer than x39.

Given the likely costs, surely it's cheaper to just buy a 7.62x39?

Yes I agree. The Norinco in 7,62×39 sells for R 4950 at NSN Guns Pretoria. What other viable options are there to keep it.Scope mount fitted at VLT @ R1000 plus the scope of coarse...

Reloading for .303 also not that cheap.Millsurp ammo probably the way to go.NSN do sell Berdan primed cases though.450 /41 rounds.Hornady points(projectiles)go for +- R600.etc etc.

I'm not sure I follow your reasoning. You want to go 7.62x39 because 303 ammo is expensive to reload? Just remember that to get decent pricing on x39 milsurp you're buying in units of 1 case (1500 rounds) so not cheaper on the actual outlay. A case of x39 will set you back roughly R8-9k and you'd have to buy the whole case or pay more per round.

    I think it's a lekker idea.

If the barrel is still ok you would only need to cut it back, cut the chamber, and re-thread to fit the action. The chamber of the x39 is much shorter, so the knox form forward of the neck will stay the same size, hence safe.

The bolt face and extractor will have to be modified to fit the smaller diameter rim.

Will make a great little cast bullet carbine.

Almost there. Still have not seen an intro thread as per welcome email. It should go here: http://www.gunsite.co.za/forums/foru...-Introductions

Also, I must say this was an interesting subforum for this post
