Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
As mentioned, I received an old safe from my good friend Chris Moolman. This safe will form the base of my new three gas burner forge. I will do most of my forging work with this forge. The charcoal forge I currently am working on a concept to make it more economical, this is in regards to charcoal making on a larger scale.
Some photos of the lathe turning work I did yesterday..this will be the inner workings of the anvil-vice ..the slide/screw rod of the vice..
I am working towards this example, I will be effect changes to this design that will fit the 1889 era ...
Here is the safe that will constitutes a building process to turn it into a gas forge.
The inside of what is going to be the gas forge I am building..
The outside:
I will make use of the hinges as well:

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
I spend some time today to cut out the door opening of the gad forge I am building. I did cut out a smaller opening at the back end of the gas forge . That will come in handy when I am forging longer blades . I welded square tubing slides onto the bottom of the furnace to enable me to use a slider for the longer blades to rest on when in the furnace. I will upload photos as I make progress...
Internet is extremely slow, will upload later..

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
I did manage to drill holes into the knife blades/wood scales today. I will complete these knives shortly.
I had to anneal the handles again to be able to drill the second hole into the handles.

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
A few photos of the three blades hardened again in my small forge and tempered in my household oven. I will insert the brass pins and epoxy to secure the scales tomorrow then it is only a matter of working down the handle until the grip feels great for a kitchen knife...
Hardened blades before going to the oven for tempering cycle.
Tempering for 90 minutes on 225 degrees Celsius in my small oven.

Jy som dit baie goed op Proud Prado. Ek geniet die vorming van staal met vuur en hitte...ongelooflik hoe `n stuk yster verander in staal as jy dit verhard en dan temper..alle eienskappe verander ..

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Very nice indeed Gert!!
I am one of those who follow this thread silently, learning, drooling and wishing that it's something I can try myself. But soooooon...
For now I have made piece with watching other people make knives.
I did however buy myself an old vegetable cleaver which I plan on restoring. Ito blade it seems solid, so in short I have to redo the scales, buff the blade and redo the edge. All will be done by hand as I do not own the right power tools. If I can get a buffing wheel for my baby grinder I will use that to do the final finish.
One thing I am worried about where I would like some input: The tang is fairly short, and only runs into the current scales for about 5cm. Should I look into having a piece welded on or can I just keep it the way it is and rather make provision in the scales for the tang to be merged into the material before I drop the pins in?

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
HJordaan, thank you for your participation on this thread, it really is nice to get input from members. It is not difficult to start forging. It is cheap if you start with a traveling forge and use charcoal/wood for the heat source and a hair drier for the air to get the temperatures up to forge welding temperatures. You can use an old roller bearing or taper roller bearing ring fetching at any scrap yard ...old leave springs of a motor car, any hammer that will be comfortable to use, especially if the handle has a rubber handle ....
Here is a photo of a traveling forge set up:
This is an air conditioner gas drum you can get for free at any air conditioner re-gas shop . The pipe is a galvanised pipe from any Hardware store ..the hairdryer is anywhere available...
Weld a piece of steel onto the handle to give you more grip since this is an item you will use with force.
I can build you a Traveling forge for beginners, the drum part , send it by Post Net if you are prepared to pay the
postage. All you need to do is to supply the pipe and hair dryer...
It really is a cheap way to start forging, I am building a two burner gas forge and will build two or three extra to sell . This will enable me to purchase electric hand equipment.

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Good day members. Chris Moolman and I visited our good friend Ian Mills at Kayalami ( Sandton) this weekend. We really did a lot of things . I nearly completed the three kitchen knives I am working on. Build the door slide system on my new two burner gas forge as well. We had a lot of discussions in regards to conducting blacksmith courses for beginners at Ian`s workshop. I will give more info in this regards.
We tested new burners, building devices we can use in the upcoming beginner black smith course..
Ian Mills/Chris Moolman discussing my gorilla furnace to harden my blades. I clad the whole furnace to ensure more effective heat distribution.
Constructing a brick sliding door to ensure less heat/gas escapes .This is a design I prefer instead of a door opening/close.
I baked the floor after covering it with a mixture of refractory cement/clay . This will ensure the ceramic fibre board I used as the bottom will not be damaged by borax when forging cable damascus.
An example of a charcoal /wood forge Ian Mills designed and build..I am currently busy duplicating his design. This forge will be use for longer cable /blades to forge weld.
Photos of the kitchen knives I am busy completing forged from roller bearing housings.
Ian Mills forging a lever to make metal rings .
Chris Moolman doing what he does best, Gorilla welding , ugly but strong..
Brick sliding door..

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Thank you for the info Gert. At this stage the biggest issue is the noise factor. I live in an estate within very close proximity of my neighbors.
Very nice workshop Ian has there!!
As for my little restoration project. I went shopping this weekend, got myself some resin to turn an old jean into micarta scales as well as the basic sand paper. If all goes well I'll start working on the project over the next 2 weeks or so.
