Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Luke, I used to quench in sunflower oil..I now am fortunate to get hold of real tempering oil from a friend who owns a coil/leaf spring business. I did forge two bearings when I visited family in Cape Town..using a traveler`s forge I build....Up to today I only quenched leaf spring steel...I will forge another bearing when returning from the black powder hunt..I will then give you results..As mentioned previously..bearing steel is probably the best/excellent steel to forge a knife..since it really gets extremely sharp..only disadvantage is the difficulty to drill the tang/handle...I am busy looking for a type of drill bit that will be able to drill through the bearing steel knife blades...

I have had great success drilling 500 bhn plate and blades post heat treat using a masonry drill bit with the carbide tip ground to an appropriate profile. (You use the green wheel in your grinder for this) Assuming you anneal first any cobalt bit or the above should do the trick just fine

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Step one:
Weld the two ends....most cable used in South Africa that is suitable for cable forging have an outer winding to the left while the inside cable strands all turn to the same side opposite of the outer layer..when heating up the cable to forge temperatures and turning the cable to tighten the outer winding pops out...you need to remove the outer winding layer....forge the two ends into a square so you can secure the one end in the vice and turn the other end using a wrench that you welded a long piece of bar to it so you can turn the cable tight to achieve better welds...You need to apply borax at the first heat so it will clean the cable...brush with a steel brush as well....on your first heat with borax you can hit the heated cable onto a anvil to shock the muck from the cable...
Step two
Bring the cable temperatures up to forge weld , white hot heat, and start to forge weld small pieces at a time until it is round..you will notice a thud sound as the cable is forging together..
Keep on forging until you have a round stave and flatten it into a bar...now it will be a good time to forge it into a blade...follow the videos it will give you insight..You need to forge at least three cables and forge them together to give you any metal to work with..the cable tends to diminish a lot while being forge...
Here is a few good videos..

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
It seems things are quieting down on my side..I will be focusing on completing knives still in unfinished condition ..the first knives I will be completing is knives I own people who removed large boulders from my foot path through the years...I will also complete knives of the 1884 Era black powder hunt that still needs completion as well as the Viking type axes I am still working on...then my focus will be on making large butcher knives for myself and my friend Chris Moolman. I really want to specialise in butcher knives ...as well as in kitchen dining knives, forks and spoons , forged from re-bar as well as cable ...
I need to complete a third two burner gas furnace as well...that I will sell to a person who want to commence with forging as a hobby...

Spend some time today to forge a Laplander Phuko knife from Norway. I will fit Olive or Tambotie wood scales for the handle...

Re: 72" x2" Knife blade Belt sander machine build
Members I spend the last two days forging my first chef knife. I used a Air-conditioner gas bottle and wood, blowing air from a hair-dryer It is quite a functional set up for members who wants to start relatively cheap..you need a piece of leaf spring 200x40x4 piece, this heats up quite fast and the furnace generate enough heat to bring the temperatures up to forging temperatures...here are some photos: I will be forging six more chef`s knives with different blade designs...

Just to clear up, the leaf spring is for the knife, not to keep the forge hot?
If anyone in the pub,Midlands are a needs a cylinder like the gert used just give me a shout.

Trayton, good to hear from you again..
This is a cheap forge set up I use to forge where ever I travel to, I call it the traveler forge..you can use wood, charcoal or what ever material that will burn when you blow air through it to get the forging heat you need to forge leaf spring steel...the leaf spring you see is the one I made the chef knife with, the other object is part of the learners spade they are busy as a project with...I am learning /teaching/ training them to forge...
