Re: Novice Knife Makers Thread
Gerhard, those are some really nice knives! How do you know which files to get or is it a little hit and miss? Trying to scrounge around an found a couple but have no idea?

Re: Novice Knife Makers Thread
Hi David
The last one is a Nicholson Canada so that's known to be 1095, the rest are old and German, those seem to be good qualities
I got a box of old files from a local gun shop, one of the large flat files is a bit of an unknown quantity. In that case I water quench the tang of the file during the annealing process, hit it with a hammer to make sure it's not mild steel.

My first and second attempts at knife making.
Used 5160 steel. 2st knife has g10 handle, and the second knife has a carbon fibre handle.

Re: Novice Knife Makers Thread
Guys any more feedback on the little ryobi belt sanders? I have been hand profiling thus far with a filing jig. It takes time but I like the results! Also on handle finishing, I've been using straight woodock and quite like the finish.

Re: Novice Knife Makers Thread
I have used one of the ryobi mini belt/disc sander combinations, I think it’s a 25x760mm belt (1”x32”) with a 150mm disc.
It works ok, certainly much better than hand tools, but bogs down if I get too aggressive. Also works best with proper belts designed for steel, the wood belts just don’t last in my experience.
One thing to watch out for is that the thin belt makes it a lot easier to accidentally grind waves into your bevel - light pressure and more passes seems to work better than trying to hog a lot of steel off in one go.

Re: Novice Knife Makers Thread
I got myself the Addendorfmini belt and disk grinder.
Works well in my opinion, no problems.
The disk chows stock like a monster and the belt doesnt disapoint either.
the belts from addendorfI think is for metal.
