Re: Best Fire steel?
The one you have with you when you need one. I must have half a dozen different ones and they all work just fine. I think having the right tinder is more critical.

Re: Best Fire steel?
You sure about that? The magnesium I got my hands on from the school chemistry store room burned rather well.

Any true magnesium obviously will, but I have seen videos of brands of which the so called magnesium does not.

Eish. Reminds of school, early 92, or 93. Steven or patric stole some potassium or natrium. Cant remember. It was stored in paraffin. He put it in his pocket. Then went to the bathroom next door, to wash his hand to get rig of the paraffin , then continued to put his hands in his pockets. It did not end well for him.

Thanks Mr_Medic
Firesteel.com also seems to have good stuff, but it appears they don't ship here.

Re: Best Fire steel?
I recently bought some 7mm x 5m Eco Rope from Builders Express. I think it is probably jute or sisal. The rope is made of 3 strands which can be separated to give 15 m of rope for shelter building or separate a strand and fluff it up to make a birds nest for a charcloth fire or lighting with a fire steel. You can ,of course use vaseline as an extender.A lot cheaper than paracord for a multitude of tasks.
