Re: Best Fire steel?
Eish. Reminds of school, early 92, or 93. Steven or patric stole some potassium or natrium. Cant remember. It was stored in paraffin. He put it in his pocket. Then went to the bathroom next door, to wash his hand to get rig of the paraffin , then continued to put his hands in his pockets. It did not end well for him.

Re: Best Fire steel?
Also had good service out of the Swedish fire steel, compared to the gerber bear grylls one which was less effective and more pricey.

Re: Best Fire steel?
My Girlfriend bought me a Bear Grylls /Gerber fire steel. Used it whilst we where camping this weeekend.
Made 6 fires, and it worked every single time.
Guess the best one is the one you have on you.
It is rather bulky though....but it works!
The key here is in the Prep work I have learnt.

Re: Best Fire steel?
My BG one stays in my day pack. I keep the vaseline cotton wool in the storage cavity. It works really well.
Stay Bladed.

Re: Best Fire steel?
i like the largest rod i can get my hands on, but can still carry in a pocket. i find they last longer and throw loads of sparks, ive tried many of the smaller rods they dont seem to work as well as the larger sightly softer rods.
Anyone have any experience with the softer rods?

Re: Best Fire steel?
UST makes the StrikeForce and it is built like a tank (with a small compartment for a WetFire tinderblock) , they also have the BlastMatch which can be operated one-handed, the UST Sparky is a more compact choice. If you want to go smaller (like in EDC) look no futher than the Exotac nanoSTRIKE.
