18" barrel is a great choice for 3 Gun.

Guys shoot out to 350m fine with a red dot in some competitions. I dont see an advantage using a 3x + scope in all the 3 gun competitions we do in SA. 95% of the guys in the states in 3 Gun Nation are running 1-6 scopes and easily shoot targets out to 400 yards.

Having a true 1x scope will easily let you shoot close up stuff. This can be changed during a COF if needed with a throw lever.

Taking a scope of mid match is insanity in my book.

I dont know if I am getting my point across but if you do go the 1-4/1-6 route you will look back in a years time and be glad. If you get a higher power scope you will be selling it on gs soon or putting it on another rifle. A strike eagle is a great choice although someone like Khumba can give you some more options like Meopta etc
    Great advice!

Looking for my first scope on an AR. Not keen on a red dot, as i intend to zero it at 100m and try & push it out from there.

The ones that appeal on paper are:

Leopold Mark AR 4-12x40 AO P5 Mildot

    Zeiss Terra 3-9x42 Reticle 20 Z-Plex

    Bushnell AR Optics 3-12x40 BDC

    Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x42NP

Quite the mixed bag.... Budget - I wouldn't want to go over R10k, unless it really is on a special...

Any of these that i should avoid?

Any others that i should look at given what I would like to do?

    Thanks
I have one on my NEA. Easily get hits from CQB to 300m.

    Lynx Professional Series LX3 1-6x24iR

I like the Leupold Mark AR 1.5x4x20

Have a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x20 and the 3-9x40 couldn't be happier. The knobs are easy for adjusting when playing around on further targets on the shooting range and the clicks are solid. The reticle is also very nice for hold overs and even has a red light which could be switched on. I would highly recommend these.

Not sure if this is still available but this would be a nice cheap start.

6x is plenty for shooting out to distance with the AR

Sorry for the hijack, but how would a Leupold vx3 2.5-8 × 36 fare on an AR?
I mean for competition shooting purposes

Thank you for all the input.

Seems like I was on the wrong track altogether. Will look into a 1-6 or a dot sight, for starters.

    Keep you posted.

Don't waste your time with a red dot. At your budget get a Vortez Strike Eagle and call it good.

I suggest a Warne RAMP Mount and if your shooting IPSC getting an offset red dot on there down the line.

    Is the mount avail locally?
