If you're considering both the Shield and the FS, then what you really want is the 9c. I have all of them, the Compact lives on me 99% of the time. Only in some very specific situations will I choose the Shield over it.

I edc my M&P40 FS with little problem. Yes I have had to change my wardrobe a bit, but it's not as hard as you think. Luckily my work dress is very casual, so a good belt with IWB holster carried at 4 o'clock dissappears under a lose golf shirt.
If you can't have both... go FS.
