Default LED Maglite - which batteries?

Got two pristine Maglites from Mr Medic this morning - thanks again! Now I need to feed them. Which batteries do I use?

Energizer Lithium has a good name but are expensive (R160/4?).

I consider rechargeables, but which ones?

Nitecore have some really quality batteries and chargers. You can also check out Alphacell for non rechargeables.

What size batteries? Energizer lithiums are the best commonly available (meaning the local Spar) even if expensive.

Size batteries? If you go e.g. NiMH rechargeable get the "hybrid" type, as their self discharge is a lot slower.

A friend of mine had a piece of wood turned, as a insert inside his flash light now he can use smaller diameter batteries and now he uses a single 18650 battery with a 2 cell maglite globe in his 4 cell flash light. He use a alluminium rod to complete the circuit. It feels like there are no batteries in his light.

I've got a 3 cell Maglite, that has more silver than black, did the conversion from normal globe to LED when it just came out.
my last set of energizer alkaline batteries lasted just under 4years, as I changed them a year into my current job.
thus, any D-Cell batteries that is Lithium based will work without any problems. but then again, I did change over to a LED Lenser as my primary light source for the last 4 years

Also have 2 of the maglite 3D cell torches. Bought rechargeable AA batteries with Dcell adaptors... Think it was from Makro.... works just fine. Probably does not last as long as a Dcell would... but it's the same voltage and much easier to obtain AA batteries... couldn't find Dcell rechargeable batteries when I got the torches

That is true, but that is the reason for the machined wooden/plastic insert. I have 2 maglites but they are not the best flash lights, even with the LED conversion but they surely are the best multi purpose club around. (a not so gentle, persuation tool)
