Is URBAN READY a logical evolution and progression of EDC?
Beyond EDC?
Is URBAN READY a logical evolution and progression of EDC?
Many of us EDC practitioners appear to be putting ourselves at a potential disadvantage by virtue of our scope of readiness being overly handgun centric. This would leave us potentially ill prepared for many of the countless incidents and challenges which occur every day which require tools other than a handgun as a solution or initial response, for reasons we trust will be obvious, or where you do not wish to disclose (yet) that you are carrying or where you are denied access to your handgun. Worst nightmare, you are surprised or outwitted and you and your family end up in the hands of murderous criminals. How ready are you to deal with these situations? Have you planned and prepared properly?
We propose the evolution from pure EDC to URBAN READY EDC with suitable and relevant gear, planning and training to deal with the urban jungle’s many potential nasty surprises where a handgun may not be accessible or feature centre stage as the relevant or even as the appropriate tool or solution, with a specific emphasis on the many jeopardies we probably rarely, if ever, actually consider.
The Art of Readiness is to EXPECT the UNEXPECTED – to be URBAN READY!

Re: Is URBAN READY a logical evolution and progression of EDC?
I think we (at least on this forum) are somewhat more prepared in line with the above. The thread "practical to tactical" that surfaces every now and again is testament thereto.
Recently I've found my purchases are less handgun-centric, but oriented to tools to deal with those everyday surprises. My recent baton acquisition is more defensive oriented, but the most of my recent purchases are more to do with dealing with sudden unexpected downpours, to flooding, to being unable to get to electricity or water or food for a while, etc.
South Africa is fraught with the unexpected. From load shedding to water shortages to criminal action.

Re: Is URBAN READY a logical evolution and progression of EDC?
This was an awesome read. So +1 here.
I do think the vast majority of guys here are covering the bases of preparedness by carrying a FA, Knife, multitool and a few even a day pack or go bag or something similar, hell there are a few guys who even edc IFAKS (well done btw)
I do however think this needs to be expanded on, as I am yet to see many folks learning counter custody techniques (not for nefarious purposes) or other equally important skillsets.
Stay Bladed.

Re: Is URBAN READY a logical evolution and progression of EDC?
Thank you Skaaphaas and Mr Medic !
Those "other equally important skillsets" (and gear) to "deal with those everyday surprises" are what we are about.....EXPECT the UNEXPECTED, plan, prepare & practice for them, prevent those surprises from surprising you.........be URBAN READY !
You fall prey to a home invasions or carjacking.
Locked up and tied up in the boot of your car or your bathroom at home. Suddenly that lock pick and shim or the edged weapons and other tools you concealed in there months ago in what you thought was a moment of paranoia don’t seem so paranoid after all. They end up saving your life. Or did you dismiss that moment of paranoia and now wish you hadn't..........?
Life threatening injuries can be sustained in seconds.
Will you or a loved one survive or die waiting for help? Whilst solutions can often be improvised for the basics, does your kit (IFAK Lite?) at least include critical lifesavers like Quickclot bandages, chest seals and a tourniquet? Small items, huge value – these are lifesavers which can be relatively easily carried on you or at least in any bag that you may typically carry.
Expect the Unexpected. Practice the Art of Readiness. Be URBAN READY!www.fireforcetactical.co.za
