I found this interesting, alhough it's possibly not new to some of you:

    a sub-projectile within a fragmenting projectile.

Hi All, pls excuse my ignorance. Why is reloading 300 BLK rounds so expensive? Doesn't the .300 BLK use normal .30 cal bullets, thus the only difference between .308 and .300 BLK being the case?

Hi CK, My limited understanding of this is that because 300 BLK is not sold or produced as extensively say as 5.56/.223 or 7.62x51/.308, there is not the economy of scale that could bring the manufacturing & trading costs down. Hopefully this will change, but until then, I'll be converting .223 cases for most of my use.

The heavier bullets for subsonic loads will also push the price up and thus I plan to cast and powdercoat my subs in the not-too-distant future.

As things currently stand, this will help to make the shooting of 300 BLK far more affordable than using factory ammo, but the trade-off is the cost in time.

Hopefully as the calibre gains popularity in SA, factory ammo will come down in price.

Apart from the brass reloading for 300 BLK should be cheaper than 308. All the components are basically the same but you use much less propellant. 300BLK is also much lighter on brass.

Premium bullets that perform balistically are not as common for the reduced speed compared to 308 or 30_06. but for range work most 30cal bullets should work.
