Default Re: 404 Jeffery : 25 meter zero to hunt at 100 -150 meter ?

    Gert...Bore sight at 25,fire 1 shot.

Hold rifle dead steady,on bags with the cross hair on your aiming point.Get someone else to adjust your scope while you are looking through it untill the crosshair is on your bullet hole.

This will "put you on the paper" at 100m and you can do final adjustments from there.

Thank you , this is excellent practical advice , I definitely will do as you suggested.

I am awaiting bullets from a supplier, core bonded bullets to see how it will perform. I am fortunate to have brand new Hornady brass ....

I am looking at Peregrine and Rhino as well as suggested by Robert in above tread, as pointed out I really appreciate all the advice and opinions members give...

    Update:
I did manage to re-load the 404 Jeffery today and zero at twenty five meters. Next step, zero on 100 meters on Saturday on the shooting range. I will do this zero on a shooting stick...it will mirror a hunting scenario....

I think good practice (it's good to do this with any rifle shooting, and/or handgun), is to know where your bullet will land on various distances when zero'ed as you've set it up.
If you zero it on 100m, where does it land on 25,50,75,125 and 150m?

Knoffel, good point, I will zero it on 100 meters and work backwards to 70 meters, 50 meter and 30 meters and see where the trajectory impacts..I doubt that there will be a huge margin of difference on the short distances...maybe further out to 150 to 250 meters for this caliber..but I stand to be corrected..

If you zero at 100, bullet drop from about 150m onwards is going to be like a brick from an earoplane about....up to 150m, with the 100m zero, you should be able to place a bullet within about a 4" range, from a max of 2" low to 2"high, ranging from 25m out to 150m. Depending on load obviously. As suggested, get a load that works, and then stick with it and learn the trajectory. As for the 25m zero, when ever I did something to one of my hunting rifles, I always zero on 25m first, to make sure I hit paper on 100m to work from, so as to not waste ammo, especially on the bigger more expensive stuff. I boresight for 25m, to get it to print on 25m, then get it as close to zero as possible, again without wasting ammo, and then move out to 100m and work from there. Hope this helps !

    Gert...Dont be a girl

Shoot it off the bench to zero at 100m. should not take more than a couple of shots. + 1x3 shot group..you have to know.
Sit upright at the bench with high rests,do not hunch foreward into rifle.
Sit square to the target, not at an angle like with a smaller caliber.
    Hold rifle firmly into shoulder.

Should be almost as comfy to shoot as if you were standing.

    Then,by all means,shoot off sticks for practice.Enjoy

When shooting a medium or bige bore rifle from a relatively low bench, I like to stand on my knees, so I can keep my body upright. A sandbag (or2) under the knees helps to keep things comfy and adjust my height. Depends on the bench height off the ground, of course.

Ballistics expert Keith Luckhurst ran some trajectory tests comparing a .404 Jeffery loaded with 400-grain bullets at 2280 fps, a .458 Winchester Magnum loaded with 500-grain bullets at 2090 fps, and a .375 H&H leaded with 300-grain bullets at 2550 fps, all sighted in at 100 meters. According to Luckhurst, “At 250 meters the .375 Magnum has dropped 11 inches, the .404 has dropped 13 inches and the .458 has dropped 18 inches. But at 150 meters there is a spread of only one inch between these calibers, and at 200 meters it is four inches. Most gunwriters would describe the .375 Magnum as flat shooting and the descriptions of the .458 tend to include words like ‘rainbow trajectory.’ In reality, the point of aim for any of the rifles is virtually the same out to 150 meters.” Luckhurst concludes that the .404 Jeffery, with better penetration and less recoil than the .458, a trajectory almost as flat as the .375 H&H, and overall performance similar or equal to the .416 Rigby, is a particularly well-balanced rifle for the largest and most dangerous game.
