    Default .308 Winchester which one?

All the best to the Gunsiters out there...

Its time for me to have a center fire rifle feature in my life. I have a lekker Marlin .22 LR rifle but feel the need to "man up" to the.308 Winchester platform, but which one?

The action of a 700 Remington seems to be the way to go as they say it is super solid and uber reliable. But i have not discounted the CZ or Savage brands.

I have four rifles options that I am considering:

    1) REMINGTON 700 SPS VARMINT
    2) CZ 550 Varmint Laminated, lovely looking rifle!
    3)
    REMINGTON 700 SPS Tactical 308
    4)
    SAVAGE MOD12 VLP LAMINATED STAINLESS

.308 Win is an all rounder caliber and not a barrel burner, I will be initially using it for mid range target shooting and will want to use it when I am confident to ethically hunt light to medium game and oh lets not forget, bush pig hunting!

I look forward to some advise from the boys out there...

Howa seems to be excellent value as well.

All excellent options there. I would be happy with any one of them. Also consider the Howa varmint.

Just one thing, those heavy varmint rifles are not really ideal for bushpig hunting. For that you want a short, light rifle with a sighting system suitable for short range snap shots. Very few bushpigs are shot at the medium or longer ranges.

where is your hunting going to be done?

    3) has a 20inch bull barrel and is great for the bush but battles with velocity for distance shooting vs the longer barrels
1,2,4) 26" inch bull barrels nice for the long shots but I really wouldn't want to be carrying one in the bush the whole day

There is the remington 783 that is being advertised at S&O and they say it's 1 moa in the add. PRICE is not to bad to. not sure on barrel length.

The heavy barrels are perfect for the range shooting but not to great for hunting.

The rifle starts getting heavy as the stalking time goes on.

So it all depends on what it will be used for the most.

    Happy rifle shopping

I'd look at either a Howa (Varmint with 24" barrel) or a Tikka T3x (CTR). There seem to have been a number of QC issues with Remington over recent years.

A friend owns one of these 20" Remingtons. He regularly manages to ring the steel at 800m and slightly beyond. The original stock is a cheap moulded piece of plastic, so he has replaced his with a better synthetic. The rifle is a tack driver and a pleasure to shoot. He also uses a different (lighter) rifle with low mag scope to hunt bushpigs.
