Re: Opinions for Scope please
Fancy reticles in 2FP scopes are 'marketing' to get you to buy the scope.
Yes that's probably a bit of conceited and narrow statement... but not really.
On a 2FP / SFP / RFP (Second Focal Plane) scope, the reticle is only at 1:1 at one particular magnification, and most of the time this is either at Max magnification, or at 10x.
The problem with that is that you then have to start thinking what is the 'right' max magnification for my application, or you have to estimate where 10x is (even worse).
ie. If you get a 2FP scope that is above 16x max magnification and you end up with a bit too much mirage to shoot through... you're stuffed, as you can't back down.
It also means that you have to shoot everything at that magnification if you want to use the reticle to 'hold-off'.
If you are considering this route, keep high end magnification BELOW 12x.
Also, things to consider when buying these 2FP scopes.
A lot of the time the reticle is in MilRad units, and the turrets are in MOA units.
1MOA @ 100yards (91.44m) = 1.047 MOA and 1 MilRad at 100m = 10cm
Have fun doing that math - dialing in MOA and holding in Mil.
IMO: The only SFP scopes with 'tactical reticles' worth a damn are the 1-6 versions, where 6x is a useful magnification, and 1x is snap shooting.
Honestly... spend the extra cash and get a Vortex Viper PST, you'll be a LOT happier in the long run.

Re: Opinions for Scope please
Hi dayLite. I hope I wont irritate you guys. The Vortex is probably the best scope for its price compared to what it can do. As for my budget it is a total let down. I have checked some FFP scopes. Please help with pros & cons.

That Bushnell ET6245FG is great, also if on the budget side, see if you can find a Falcon Optics 5-25x50 FFP (sub R10k new).
It's a great scope for the money.
If you're also looking for a rifle, this would be a great starting package:

Re: Opinions for Scope please
Pierre, first have a look at what type of competitions are hosted in your area.
For normal hunting I would not recommend a first focal plane scope. The reticle is just to thin at low powers, that is used for fast shooting, and is difficult to pick up. Very few FFP scopes have reticles that are usable at the low end.
FFP scopes have a purpose, long range hunting might be one but in my opinion a SFP scope will be cheaper and serve you better as an all rounder.
Btw. I have both SFP and FFP scopes and still prefer the SFP for most applications. FFP does have a place but a very specific one.

Re: Opinions for Scope please
Nice perspective. Thanks Arnold. I would look in to that.
Wont I be struggling with hold over when hunting with SFP scope. I believe for paper it would be nice as you can go to that required magnification, though in hunting situations where you need a big field of view you can't go to extensive magnification to compensate for hold over.
Please correct if I am wrong

Re: Opinions for Scope please
Pierre, there are pros and cons to both FFP and SFP.
Hold over when hunting - it depends on distance. If you need to hold a lot the distance is great and you probably have time to dial and you could probably use a higher mag which makes the reticle usefull.
When on low mag, large field of view - reticle is thin on the FFP scope but on SFP scope reticle is good. Shooting distance might not be that far and hold over might be negligable.
You win some you lose some and that is why my advice is to make sure what the scope will be used for most before making the decision.

Thanks. I've looked through several scopes in the 6-24 range that cost around the same as the Fuulfield II. They were crap for a number of reasons. In my mind a decent scope with that much magnification will cost much more than a Fullfield.
This is personal but that is too much magnification for me in a hunting scope. Especially at the low end. For target shooting(which I don't do) it would be a different story.
