SO YOU OWN/CARRY A FIREARM...HERE'S SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT....
We all have the contact numbers for Police, Ambulance, Fire Dep't etc on our phones or on the fridge door, but how many of us have a competent, reliable attorney's contact number (and I mean direct number, - not the office) available at our finger tips?
Many years ago, I was undergoing some training in practical pistol shooting, and my instructor drilled two things into me:
1. "Environmental/situational awareness is the key to survival" and,
2. Always have an attorney or at least emergency legal representation available that you can contact ANY TIME OF DAY, ANY DAY OF THE YEAR.
A little more than a year ago, my son was arrested two days before Christmas for pointing of a firearm. The charge was later dropped as it turned out to be a set-up by a very dodgy police officer. However, the lesson learnt was that my instructor's advice from all those years ago, still is of paramount importance. It was a nightmare trying to find an attorney that was even working at that time of year, let alone one that practices criminal law and who was willing to attend court on the day before Christmas.
That incident, together with reading the many posts on Gunsite regarding legal issues/questions has got me wondering how many of us have made provision to secure a competent attorney's services when suddenly needed? In my opinion, it is absolutely imperitive that you contact your attorney at the same time as,(if not before) the police after being involved in a fire-arm related incident.
I for one, have since paid a trusted attorney a retainer, and have his cell number on my cell phone.
Any other suggestions/ thoughts?

Always have an attorney's direct contact number and specifically confirm with him/her whether they are available after hours. As for the retainer, unless you make a habit of getting arrested I think it is overkill. Most attorneys don't require a retainer to be available 24/7, however it is going to cost you a pretty penny when you do wake them up at 3AM.
