Indeed. On a representative basis. But we can't be there all the time for everyone. When PC Plod kicks down your door at 2am you'd best be a GOSA member with access to our 24hr helpline and preferably with Gunsure insurance, or have a good firearms-specialist attorney on speed-dial.

How to weigh them up then?

The law is interpreted in various steps (real law people, please correct me here). The primary (and you only reach for secondary and additional interpretation tools if the primary is confusing or contradictory) means is the plain language interpretation.

This entire opinion is based completely on the law as it written (AKA 'black-letter law'), so the plain language interpretation is spot on the money. Anyone with a solid grasp of English and comprehension should be able to work it out... not to cast aspersions on anyone whose home language is NOT English, but sometimes (and I'm not saying this is so in this instance at all) English can be a little tricky to understand what with all the nuances and such.

Only where the primary interpretation (plain language/black-letter law) is confusing do people reach for secondary tools to interpret the meaning. This is not the case here at all. Somewhere down the road we then get 'the intention of the legislature', now we have to start invoking spirits and stuff... This is DEFINITELY not the case here.

Then we have case law. This is where the courts have delivered a judgement which then interprets the law definitively. The courts have not pronounced on this.

All we are left with, then, are opinions. And the opinion which is based on primary interpretation is king!

    Ah!

This is no great trade secret, on the other hand.

If the plain meaning interpretation does not lead to any absurdities, it applies.

Counsel's opinion here is even longer than it could have been.
