Night vision for Farmer
My father in law farm next to Golden Gate Park and the Lesotho Border. He struggle a lot with live stock theft and seeing that he farm with stud Angus, he invest a lot to keep his cattle safe. He lost cattle worth 500K two years ago.
He currently does night patrol on a regular base. He wants to now what night vision setup would work best? A rifle mounted setup (like the ATN X Sight5-18) or something like a Night vision goggles ATN NVG7 or PS15?
Advise from users of either of these two or similar setups would be appreciated.

Re: Night vision for Farmer
Something to watch out for...i use and have used a few different night vision systems in both detection and rifle scope forms for shooting bushpig at night.
The one system [night site] has a screen which casts a glow back on your face. The other systems which rely on an infrared illuminator [invisible to the eye spotlight] emit a dull red glow from the illuminator. Both the screen glowing back on your face and/or the faint red glow do not hassle bushpigs but would be visible to an alert human.

Re: Night vision for Farmer
What about something like FLIR instead? More expensive, but longer range

Re: Night vision for Farmer
FLIR is Forward Looking InfraRed.
We've used it on drones to find BG's in the neighbourhood in the veld and it's really really effective. Basically it provides feedback based on temperature, but to be precise, it uses a thermographic camera that detects and senses infrared radiation. So if you look at a car, the engine area will be the brightest.

Re: Night vision for Farmer
The advantage of FLIR is that a light screen of bush or someone lying down in long grass is still detectable. This heat signature will detect someone hiding which may or may not be an advantage to you.

Agree, drone based thermal imaging which you can pre-programme or fly remotely lets you cover a lot of difficult terrain efficiently. Also useful for game counts and locating animals.
