Sorry, just checking out of curiosity.. the 243 bolt works in the 6.5 but not the 243? That is strange.

Yep... so it's something on the 243 that's wrong, not the bolt itself.

The bolts from both rifles are identical

On the picture the safety looks partially set.

I'll take them out the safe again in the morning and check it out. I'll post pics.

    Thanks for your help

You stated the bolt was open when you moved to 300 meter.
Is it possible a foreign object dropped into the action and has worked its way into the recess where the bolt lugs lock?
This would prevent the bolt from closing fully.

    Hi Blunderbrass,
The rifle was bagged and carried to the 300m mark.
I was also thinking the same thing though, how can I check if something is in there??

    Nigel,

I know you don't believe the problem to be the bolt but just noticed something. Is it normal on the Savage for the plunger ejector not to be proud of the bolt face? If not then looks like something may have broken.

Also your bolt could do with a good clean.

It also looks like the two lugs are slightly rotated. Maybe some dirt in plunger assembly?
