Antelope that are good for more than just bilton
Hey guys.
So this winter, I am looking for more than just the usual Biltong hunting.
As the thread states, apart from Eland, which other antelope are good/great for meat cuts and the freezer, and obviously worth the price (excluding the pricing that goes along with the experience of hunting) ?
I am looking to hunt for more than just biltong this and even more so next year.
Thanks guys

Possibly my all time favourite is Mountain Reedbuck.

I'm not an expert. I've only shot gemsbok, waterbok and springbok. I made much more than biltong of all three and enjoyed every bite. Taking the skin off the waterbok takes a little care, but there was nothing left in the freezer after a few months. Steak, wors, mince, potjie and pie. And of course biltong and droëwors. If you can cook to a decent standard, there is no reason not to shoot either of the three.

Mountain reedbuck is good,so is fallow deer,so is gemsbuck.
Just remember that the best meat/tablefare comes from a ewe or cow or a young ram or bull and also depends on veld conditions and cooking methods.
A blesbuck ram, while ok as venison can be a lot better to eat than even an eland cow if care has been taken with the condition of,the speed of death, and treatment of the carcass and not done with the eland.
So ja,the better question would be...which animal has the potential to be the best eating.
Also, different cuts of the animal are better suited to different meals. Some parts are good for mince or hamburger patties, some to braai, some for roasts and so on.You need to do some research on the subject to get the most out of your venison.

Gemsbuck makes great meat cuts and so does kudu, sprinbuck is also up there.
My fav up to this point must be redhartebees.
The qaulity of the meat does depend on the animal but very importantly on the what happens after the shot. How quickly you gut the animal and get it into a cold room. The meat also needs to cure for a few days.

Eland, very nice. Had some Eland steak last week, cooked rare, prime piece of meat.

+1 on reedbuck, although I've only had common.
To throw one in the mix. Best meat I've ever had was sable! Not the cheapest though 😜
