Vektor SP1 Sport - Guidance required
Good day everyone.
Some assistance is required. a Quick search revealed that most threads on GunSite on the Vektor SP1 only relate to "where do I get other sights" and "why should I not get one". Granted I'm currently suffering a light concussion and my Google Fu might be broken.
Long story short. This weekend I introduced a new shooter to IPSC and the gent is super keen to continue. He has a Vektor SP1 Sport. He is however not super informed and admittedly neither am I on this pistol nor division. He has most of the gear required, belt and holsters and sufficient magazines. His pistol is however still in the original configuration.
He will obviously have to shoot in the open division due to the compensator (Thanks for the info Psychosis)
Question 1: major vs minor. I have very little (none) experience with 9mm major. Building the load seems relatively easy on Quickload and S221 (I'm assuming S221 and required effort). My question is this, is it advisable for his pistol? Wear and tear etc. Is the SAMI specifications and limits for a compensated pistol different to a normal pistol? Regardless of the answer on Major vs Minor, I will require some guidance on what load will perform best in this pistol. Not looking for precise loads, just good advice.
Question 2: Optics. Should he proceed with getting an optic for this pistol or should he run in the current configuration for a bit before making the leap? What would be the suggested makes he should consider? Also, while in Gauteng, what shops, gunsmiths should he consider to get this done?
Question 3: What have I missed in the process and what have I not considered?
Thanks in advance! I hope my gibberish makes sense.

Can he not take the comp off to shoot in Standard?
9mm Major is probably a bad idea in anything that is not built as a Major gun to start with.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:

I'm not sure about the possibility nor am I sure if your comment was a question or a suggestion. I'm rather slow today. This specific pistol has the front sight on the compensator.
Was my initial thought as well given the info I have after reading a few threads on various forums.

Re: Vektor SP1 Sport - Guidence required
My comment is both a question and a suggestion. If the comp can be easily removed - they screw off if I recall - then I would do that even if it meant that I would have to get the slide milled for a new sight.
Or he could get a new slide with sights. I suspect that they may be available from Nobleteq.
I would not shoot major, and I don't think that minor loads would generate enough gas to make the comp work.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:

He will want an optic if he's going to shoot open
I would suggest if he chooses that route to shoot minor for now. 9mm Major is nothing to sneeze at and mistakes can be costly.

Re: Vektor SP1 Sport - Guidence required
Thank you for the info so far. It confirmed my my suspicions wrt to the major vs minor debate.
He will have to then decide between standard minor (Single Action) and open minor. Both will require work to the gun so it leaves me with the question with which gunsmith would be best?
Thanks.

Re: Vektor SP1 Sport - Guidence required
I would suggest just add the optic for now. Ammo is cheap and reloading will be easy and safe for the 9mm minor. 98% of the game can be learnt with that gun. Stage planning and execution and getting used to the speed of Open Division can all be done with 9mm minor. If he then gets to the point where changing to major in Open will actually make a significant difference in scores, he will know exactly what he wants in an Open gun. He can start saving for one now and in a year or two if he still feeling like going full bore for Open Division it will be a simple matter of getting the gun that suites him.

The SP1 is a Beretta 92 underneath.Hot loads over time would not do the locking block or frame any good.

Re: Vektor SP1 Sport - Guidence required
Why not let him shoot against himself in open division and in a match or 2 or 10 then he can think of making the "plunge". In my previous club the is a old omie who has the same gun as the OP and we let him shoot it in the club champs against all the rest of the guys because he was "no" competition, except to himself.

Option 2... Rescomp would be my 1st call.
If it were me and it were possible I would shoot Standard 1st and then consider joining the F1 gunners when my feet are thoroughly wet.
