    Default 6.5-284 Norma

Don't see them really available locally.. S&O etc has brass for it, but where does one find such a rifle out of curiosity?

And if I may while the 6.5 x 284 is on table, it being a " I need caliber", just what is the niche for this weapon. Where does it beat the 243/270/284 + where do you find them. I need to understand why I need it.

AFAIK it was developed as a F-Open cartridge to shoot high bc 6.5 bullets faster than other 6.5's.
There are a few factory rifles chambered for it, all the guys I know who shoot them have custom built rifles for LR shooting. S&O have Savages chambered in 6.5-284 from time to time.

Originally wildcat design from .284 case, became so popular that 6.5-284 commmercial brass is available, much more readily than straight .284.
They are known to be heavy on barrels.

6.5-284 brass is available as a lot of guys in F-open shoot .284's and form brass from 6.5-284 cases. Norma only recently started making .284 brass, most competitive shits still prefer lapua.

    Look here:

    308 left, 6.5-284 right...that's why!

Also, smart people will tell you about 6.5 140g heads and the high BC (136g Lapua Scenar has a G1 of 0.545!), and the fact you can push this round at 2850fps (that's 270 win speeds), vs 6.5 Creed's roughly 2750ish, or the 6.5 x 47 Lapua's 2700ish (but someone here proved that with Somchem getting a node for the 6.5x47 will be challenging) etc etc... but look at the picture! That's why!

Why would you go for the 6.5-284 if there is the 264 Win Mag?

Is it less of a barrel eater? The 264 easily pushes a 140gr at 3000 fps.

But 264 Win Mag brass is very scarce!! The only ones I have found is Winchester

I dont have either, but the 6.5-284 probably lies between .260 and .264WM in terms of top muzzle velocity and barrel life, .260 slower but longer barrel life and .264WM higher mv and shorter barrel life.

In SA, scarcity of brass probably counts against the WM. In terms if competitive shooters-belted case, no Lapua brass and barrel life.

Smart people call them bullets, not heads, and will tell you a 140gr bullet in a 270 can almost be pushed to 3100ft/s from a 24" 270.
But forget about the smart people for a while :)

The entire idea behind a 6.5 is getting the bullet to do the work with it's bc without having to push the rifle too hard.
We are in the hunting rifle section so I can only assume we are not discussion long range shooting competitions, hence I don't understand the reference to the scenar bullet.

You must understand that there will be precious little difference between a creedmore and the norma practially up to 500m.
Perhaps you should explain your interest/goals with such weapon a bit better, so that we may understand better.

The hunting section implies target species and also hunting environment, meaning distances.

Messor, my interest is when I saw the bullet next to a 308 and went to read up on it.. Nothing more :) At the pricepoint of the Howa Creedmoor is makes perfect sense when looking at 6.5's.. But the Norma is soooo big!! (also, 6.5-284 Norma's are what 270's want to be when they grow up).. Sorry, worst kwesbok I ever had was with a 270, I have no love for the caliber.
