Default AK/Type-56 side optic rail installation (picture heavy)

    Hi All,

Thought I would bring you along for this installation as I see many on the forum asking for details on side mounts, especially for the Type-56. I chose the UTG Pro. Read up on line and found many giving the UTG Pro the thumbs up. For it's price, it's a good choose IMHO.

Please note, I am not a gunsmith, just a tinkerer.

I decided to drill and tap the side mount. The UTG comes with nuts, that fasten down the mount on the inside of the receiver, but found that the middle bolt would not have enough space on the inside of the receiver, so decided to tap all the holes and thread.

    1. You'll need:
    - 3mm drill bit
    - Nut Lock (Loc-tight)
    - Masking tape & marker
    - Sharp punch
    - Hammer
    - Allen wrench

    2. Place mount against receiver and align the with the exposed rivets and receiver pins. Stick a strip of masking take against the receiver and mark the first position to drill the first hole. Use a sharp punch to assist the drill bit to stay on target as you start drilling.

The Type-56 stamped receiver is not difficult to drill through. Do not press to hard on the drill. Medium pressure will drill through this receiver with ease.

Once you have drilled your first 3mm hole, process to cut the 4mm thread with a thread tapper.

    3. Lightly fasten the first bolt on the left of the mount. Use masking tape and place it under the next hole to be drilled. Use a Bernier measuring tool and ensure the mount is square with the top of the receiver frame. Now mark and punch the far right hole to be drilled. Repeat the drilling and tapping.

    4. Now fasten down the mount lightly on the left and right with a piece of Masking tape under the centre hole. Repeat the steps above.

    5. Now use Nut-Lock on the bolts and tie the mount down. You will miss all the vital component inside the Type-56 receiver. The holes drill through, unhindered. the middle nut, as mentioned, will not have space or enough thread on the inside of the receiver for the nut. Hens the tapping of the drilled holes.

Hope this will be helpful. Take care all.

Thanks for taking the time to document your progress, it can be a bit of a schlep having to remember to stop after each step and take a pic.

Mods can this perhaps be a sticky seeing that quite a few people ask?

Have you guys tried the AK master mount? Apparently no gunsmithing needed?

Hi Gideon. Bought it from TIm at Tactical HQ. Their new store is on Witkoppen Rd.

Glad I could assist you with the thread.
