Lock suggestions and help ?
Hi guys,
Can you guys suggest some good quality locks ?
Are padlocks or disc locks better ?
Which brands are the best, which to avoid, etc ?
Thanks

Re: Lock suggestions and help ?
Hi Nyt Ryda.
Nearly all are now 'made in China' !
IMHO disc padlocks are better...less room for cutters/crowbars to get in.
Go for 'decent' brand names...Abacus, Yale, Viro etc.
It really is a case of 'the more you pay' the 'better the padlock'.
Check with your insurance company to see if they recommend/approve certain brands.
Regards.
Keith.

Re: Lock suggestions and help ?
Bigger is gooder, get something where the bolt piece is protected and not easily accessible. We have had best service from the bigger squarish brass padlocks as well the round steel locks. Remember that nothing is breakproof in Africa.
Locking up works even better if you can put the lock within a metal pipe which limits access to a single hand. There should be no space for a lever or bolt cutter.

Disk lock, If possible put a metal hood at the top to prevent access to the lips where the lock goes through.

Re: Lock suggestions and help ?
I found MasterLocks totally overrated.
Also perhaps one or two models in a range are far better than others for some reason. Better for me, meaning rust resistant for outside work.
Oddly enough one of the cheap and cheerful brands is fairing better than any of them.

I have had very good experience (well tested) from CISA high-security stainless steel padlocks, an Italian product.
You will only get through this lock with oxy-acetylene or angle-grinder.
They were expensive 10 years ago, when I last bought one, so not sure even what they will cost now, but worth every cent to me in peace of mind.

The square padlocks are also very good. Make sure that it has a rolling "shank" which means a bolt cutter will slip as the "shank" turns.

Re: Lock suggestions and help ?
Have also been looking for locks for our Game Reserve gates. So far these guys have been the most helpful
http://www.saundersonsecurity.co.za/.../Padlocks.html
Buy like with anything what is the intended purpose? What are you trying to secure? A door? A gate? What are your lock points? A hasp and staple? A chain? Etc etc...
Beside a crowbar a lock can be popped with very surprising ease using two spanners. Size of spanner depends on size of locks...
