Default Bought 2 Winchester pre64's, need some advice

    Hi all
Was fortunate today to buy 2x pre64 mod70 Winchesters for a good price. The first one is a very early (before WW2) .270 Supergrade. The side of the action has unfortunately been drilled for a side mount. It had a stunning Supergrade stock, but the barrel has some pitting, but should shoot well. The second rifle is a later (after 1949) .22 Hornet. Barrel is shot out.

Now my thoughts are the following: keep the .270 as is or sell to a collector as it is too good to strip for the action. And then build a custom 7x57 or 7x64 on the .22Hornet action. Keep in mind that the same length action was used frim 22 Hornets to 375's. Thoughts? Does anybody have experience with opening up the boltface and lengthening the magazine bix to turn a .22 Hornet pre64 into something larger?

Speek to Rodger Stockbridge at MRS-T first before you do anything radical.

Has it been drilled for a side mount or are those holes for fitting a peep sight? In early years the rifles were standard that way.

Extra holes drilled, over and above standard holes.

As far as I recall the magazine box was standard and had a removable spacer. The bolt stop was also made in different lengths. You will also have to modify the extractor claw.

the Hornet probably has better value than the 270 I love these actions. Seeing a Hornet cartridge sitting in than big action must be strange that someone at Winchester thought it was OK

    Sell the hornet.

Take the 270 to the range,if it shoots well then keep as is.
If it does not then re-barrel to 7x64. The holes in the side of the action can be closed if they bug you.

    Ballistically....ther is not much difference between a 160gr 270 and a 160 gr 7mm.
