The basics of knives are quite basic

Almost any one is better than no one.

    Two or more are better.

A knife requires proper training otherwise you will bleed even more than otherwise.

Get used to the idea of bleeding when going into a knife fight.

Other ideas and thoughts in the next post.

Almost any knife shape can be made to work. But: remember that the really succesful shapes developed over time amd mostly for a specific purpose. I have carried a good old Victorinox as a child and did anything with it. I also carried folders with crow bill, bowie type, leave shape and deep belly speer shape blades. Once you get the way which works best all is well.

If you work with a knife much you are probably going to grasp that specific knife if nasties force your hand; simply because you are used to grab that knife. The exception is if you dedicate enough time to prepare yourself for grabbing a dedicated fighting knife.

Ask yourself what is doable for you and what is the best choice under your given circumstances. Example: a boot knife beneath a tight denim is useless because you can't reach it in time. In that case a cheap folder near your belly button is simply wiser.

I carry a Cold Steel Roach Belly because it was cheap enough (R360?) and came with a plastic sheath which I could modify to fit my needs.

Buy a knife which will work for your purpose and under your circumstances, otherwise it will end up a safe queen.

What do you use your current folder for, and how often do you really use it?

My current knives I use are the following

    Okapi
    Kershaw whirlwind
    Kershaw volt 2
    Browning da43
    Kershaw springbok
    Joseph rodgers
And a folder that I have no idea what it is.

I've also got a meula in my bakkie ,but that is only used on animals

I had a look at the TDI , and they look quite nice , was just thought they are mainly for SD and won't be best suited for other uses.
Do I maybe have the wrong idea to have a EDC fixed blade that I want to use for everyday use , or should the SD and everday use not be mixed ?
Few blades that I saw that was quite nice was CRKT AUX or
Was wondering about the mora companion tactical as well?
The Boot knife and roach bellies also look awesome...
most of the knives that I,ve always used is a collection of folding knives.
I feel your fixed blade should remain untouched. Your folder should be your go to for tasks baring in mind you want this to also be sharp as possible.

I change between a clip down (Kelly Mccann crucible) and tip down wave function (Rajah3) blade depending on pocket design.

Go back ans think again as to why you want to carry the blade and the design will come from there.

The belly designs are also goodies and have their place.

I also feel double edged fixed blades are the best.

Listening to all the advice received .

Would it be better to rather get another blade for the main purpose of SD and not day to day use?

If so , boot knife is a def option or maybe a TDI or KARAMBIT?

A karambit, which I really like, is generally a very specialised piece of kit, it needs training specific to that blade, further to the training, it in my opinion tends to be a rather large knife because one needs extra grip length for a finger ring.

A Knive of similar blade length but different design will have around 4/5cm less length in total because the handle doesn't have to stick out the top of one's hand.

The tdi is a good compromise, reverse grip it acts like a karambit, and normal grip it is like a normal knife with stabbing and slashing motions.

There are custom holsters available for it so you have a few carry options too.

It would be preferable if you could have a dedicated SD knife, just like one should have a dedicated SD pistol and another one for range time and sport. But is it possible for you? Does your work and your clothing and your body allow for it?

Another thought: have you considered a small Victorinox vegetable knife? Very slick, easy to hide, hard to detect with a good steel blade.

Work and clothing is not a problem , half of the day in the office ,other half on the farm.
will give the Victorinox a thought.
But if I get a knife mainly for SD would rather go for something like a boot knife or TDI

It should be something which you can work with comfortably the whole day and still be very fast deployable. Forget the boot knife. The TDI lies down and does not ouch into your body like a straight knife would. You could also start looking at a neck knife like the CRKT Bear Claw. Good luck!
