Bow hunting backup gun
I am already planing for next season. I would like to carry a gun just for backup incase I need it. So mainly looking at a handgun to carry with. What would be a good caliber? What I mostly hunt is small game

What's your self defense gun normally? Maybe just carry that.

Re: Bow hunting backup gun
At this moment I don't have a handgun so was thinking something that I can use for SD and carry with when hunting

Re: Bow hunting backup gun
Is the backup for protecting yourself against storming, wounded animals or to deliver the couple de grace? A .22 can kill with a head shot but you need way more oomph to stop a charging warthog.
Get a 9mm for SD and use it for backup until you can afford a proper backup calibre.

Re: Bow hunting backup gun
I use a SIG 239 in .40 S&W. I also have an interchangeable .357 SIG barrel for it. There are several smaller and much lighter handguns available in 9mm if you trust that a 9mm will kill what you want.

Re: Bow hunting backup gun
Glock 19 that you can use in the real world to carry for SD
My 19 comes along when I go hunting to serve as both a gun for a downed animal and for SD on the hunting farm

Re: Bow hunting backup gun
For small game a 9mmP pistol, like the Glock 19 or equivalents, should be perfect. Makes a good EDC gun too, so you will get good use out of it even when not hunting.
For medium game I prefer a Glock 20 (in 10mm Auto) for backup. A 357 Mag revolver will work well too. For larger game a 44 Mag loaded with heavy bullets is my choice.
