Woah! Do you know / are able to disclose its story? I'm always fascinated by how these weapons and how they found themselves in such far flung corners of the globe.

Would be a WW2 bring back. There are still quite a few around. Very often we also know exactly who brought it back and from where.

Whilst I don't doubt that there was a haul of bring backs to South Africa (The Me 262 night fighter at the museum in Saxonwold arguably the most unique), we have G43s in New Zealand too. But a complete, matching and unfired example is the proverbial rocking horse excrement.

I'm not suggesting that I doubt you, I'm seeking clarification - are there numerous examples of such type in existence in South Africa?

Sure. They used to be very common here at one time. Seems someone came across a couple of cases of them somewhere during the course of the Libyan campaign and made a plan to ensure that they all got here. Apparently the idea was to get them into the hands of the Ossewa Brandwag... Not sure how many are still unfired though.

Apparently the scope mounts are rarer than the scopes or rifles.

Hmm, I think SA forces had left Libya (second battle of El Alamein) about a year before the rifle's introduction? Maybe during the Italian campaign perhaps?
