Alpers is actually a New Zealander who enjoys an equally questionable reputation on this side of the ditch. He's largely responsible for the site gunpolicy.org

Re: Article: Australians Turn In 12,500 Guns in National Amnesty’s First Weeks
Alpers is a lying moron and is largely viewed as such by most Australians, except those that support his objectives obviously.
This has been in the press here a lot lately and speaking to locals, listening to local radio stations etc, I would say that most Australians do not believe that they are more at risk if there is a firearm in the house and most are not anti-gun (maybe it is different in the bigger cities South and West, I am not sure) - this is simply an oft repeated line used by him and the anti-gun lobby over here. Just like all anti-gun propagandists, they repeat many lies as often as possible and then claim them as truths.
He and his bunch were caught out on their lies last time round and parliament found their claims unsubstantiated and accused them of wasting the governments time (thread is here somewhere on Gunsite). Of course the press and the antis hang on his every word.

AUSTRALIANS HAND OVER 51,000 ILLEGAL FIREARMS IN GUN AMNESTY
The illegal weapons surrendered during the three-month gun amnesty, the first in 20 years, will be destroyed.
SYDNEY – Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said about 51,000 illegal firearms, a fifth of all illegal guns in the country, were surrendered in a three-month amnesty ending Friday.
Turnbull said Australia’s tough gun ownership laws, which ban all semi-automatic rifles and semi-automatic shotguns, severely limits the chances of a Las Vegas style mass shooting.
“The killer there (in Las Vegas) had a collection of semi-automatic weapons which a person in his position would simply not be able to acquire in Australia,” Turnbull told reporters in Sydney.
American Stephen Paddock, 64, armed with multiple assault rifles opened fired on an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas from a high-rise hotel window on Sunday, killing 58 people before killing himself in the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
The shooting has focused attention on gun ownership rules in the United States.
Australia’s tough gun ownership laws were introduced after the massacre of 35 people by a lone gunman at the former prison colony of Port Arthur in the island state of Tasmania in 1996
The country has had no mass shootings since.
The illegal weapons surrendered during the three-month gun amnesty, the first in 20 years, will be destroyed.

A professor is normally an academic rank awarded at a university. Typically you would have a PhD, but it's not a requirement. I've come across many Professors without a PhD. In some countries, Professor is also used as a sign of respect even for both PhD and non PhD staff who don't officially have that title.

Re: Article: Australians Turn In 12,500 Guns in National Amnesty’s First Weeks
There are some concerns here amongst many how the numbers are arrived at, as many of the guns 'handed' in under the amnesty are not handed in in the true sense of the word and are not headed for destruction as the above article incorrectly claims.
Under the terms of the amnesty, these firearms can also be legally registered by the owner and kept, or sold, thus making the once illegally owned firearm, legally owned. These firearms are still counted as 'handed in' under the amnesty and so the actual number of firearms removed from the populace is not as high as the figures indicate.
Secondly, as expected, many firearms handed in and not registered are handed in because they are in such bad condition as to be useless and have no value. This accounts for a very large number of the firearms handed in.
Another problem, is that many people have handed in parts and even incomplete parts of firearms, such as stocks, triggers, barrels, actions, bolts etc. These are also included under the number that are handed in.
Unsurprisingly, not many firearms of the types used by criminals have been handed
The SSAA has asked the authorities for a breakdown of the firearms handed in to try and get a more accurate picture of the numbers.
