Re: Which division - Which gun
Start the game with what you have which means G19 in Production or G34 in Standard Minor. Sad to say even a shooter of your skill level aint winning when you start so the gears isn't going to be the end of the world.
Unlike IDPA the flavour of IPSC divisions is very different so i suggest competing for a bit and seeing which division appeals.
If you are stuck on 9mm when you buy a gun you need to look at Production or Classic. Both of which are appealing for different reasons.
Seriously don't buy a gun yet, come shoot first and then we will find you cool guy toys. Don't even bother with a new holster yet. Make sure yo can carry at least four spare mags for production or at least three for Standard and come shoot.

Re: Which division - Which gun
I'd wait... 2 reasons
1) if I were to pick right now if go with the Shadow 2 because it's awesome but an I hear it, it's not IDPA legal yet and buying it would be a massive investment for a sport that might not take.
2) The Glock platform is plenty competative in the beginning and hell I keep getting skooled as to the awesomeness from Austria

Re: Which division - Which gun
For a complete dissection of the whole question you would have to load the missus and kids, and come visit me for the weekend, at least. Tea, cookies etc. will be provided.
While I am an occasional IPSC shooter, and have never shot IDPA (but followed with interest), I must caution that the grass always looks greener on the other side. Greener grass is mostly due to better fertilization, often the organic type fertilizer... Ok, more seriously, both have their strong points and weaknesses, but getting more exposure and trigger time is always a good choice. (Unless you need to work sometimes.)
If "new" is what you want, get a decent 9mm 1911 type and shoot Classic (minor) division. This will make you work harder and aim for the A-zone only. I would guess that this division likely takes the most focus on marksmanship and gun handling skills, something that should suit your shooting style. Don't be put off by the old farts shooting there, "1911" and a few others you already know are also there.
Another option would be to get that Shadow 1/2 or Tanfo Stock 2/3. They are Production Div specialists, but are quite useable in a few other disciplines outside of IPSC.
Quite a few of your current pistols are suitable for either Production or Standard div. You will indeed have to start from the bottom, and only get to the point where your equipment will limit your progress in a while. By that time you will have a clearer picture of what you like or not.
Just 1 example: When I started in IPSC, I was quite annoyed by another participant who was stealing my 9mm cases (in stead of patching. There and then I decided to shoot Classic next time, so the "nice guy" could not use my 45ACP cases. Then the top shooters in Classic discovered that minor is the way to go...
My point is, shoot there first, then choose your new equipment.
