Clay pigeon holders
Our small club seems to be growing steadily and more and more guys are purchasing semi-auto rifles and shotguns so I thought it time we started preparing for some 3Gun action so made up a few of these yesterday. A copy of some I saw online.
Putting them to the test this weekend should the weather allow.

Re: Clay pigeon holders
Buy a bag of elastic bands, (the thin ones) and put them around each clay when shooting.
This helps the clay not fall off for random reasons or ricochets.

Re: Clay pigeon holders
PDH - these look a bit stronger than ours, when we replace we need to upgrade.... That bar in front of ours takes a pounding, this one will take a slug even...

And the best by (accidental) test is... a 1m length of rebar nailed vertically into the ground. You balance the clay on top of the end of the rebar and it (miraculously) seems to be totally fine in even a strong wind.

Re: Clay pigeon holders
No doubt. But the principle seems to remain sound. If you expose the face of the clay to the full force of the wind it is going to need more support from the stand/elastic/duct tape/whatever to stay in place. Balancing it like a flying saucer/frisbee seems to allow all those natural aerodynamic properties to work.
Try it out. It costs nothing.
I actually figured it out when we were making our own stands. I came up with several designs. Nailed them into the lawn in front of my house, loaded them with clays, and left them overnight. The only clays still standing were the ones seemingly precariously balanced on the straight rebar rods."Always remember to pillage before you burn"

Yip, I will for sure.
With SNATS we looked at some designs for holding a clay, and went with a standard wooden baton and precariously balanced clay. Worked well- the baton even keeps it pointed in the right direction.

Re: Clay pigeon holders
At Mapstone I saw, they used cut in halve plastic drums with a hole (just smaller than the OD of a clay) cut in it and a piece of elastic hooked across from the back. They were slid over a normal target stand with brandering. The elastic sometimes survived several shots but the drum looked in good nick at the end of a days shooting.
