WARNING ON GSM-ENABLED SECURITY SYSTEMS
I have a home security system which is GSM enabled. IE: when an alarm condition happens, it sends me a sms with the details. I have a Vodacom "messenger" contract sim card installed which costs about R35 per month. My latest bill suddenly shows R570 owing for sms's sent in July 2017.
Having investigated it seems that the system has been "hacked" into, and fraudulent use of the simcard by way of using the alarm systems' software has occurred. Thousands of SMS's have been sent throught the sytem to various unknown cell numbers and WASP services. Vodacom is investigating. Still waiting to hear what bill has been run up for August. Have removed the SIM card. It seems that I will be liable for the costs, although I intend to fight this.
If you have a GSM based alarm system that sends either text or voice messages, make sure you have a very complex/secure password programmed into it.

For that very reason I use pay-as-you-go.

Re: WARNING ON GSM-ENABLED SECURITY SYSTEMS
How can you be liable for someone basically stealing your card?

Re: WARNING ON GSM-ENABLED SECURITY SYSTEMS
But that is ME making that call. Stupid but what you get.
Someone hacking your card and sending SMSs? Like being liable if someone steals your car and speeds or steals your gun and murders...
