404 and 416 Rigby ammo is similarly priced where I work. The difference is that I usually have more options for the 416 at any one time. I have 2 rifles in 416 Rigby. None in 404.

From a reloading point of view, brass and bullets for 416 Rigby are quite readily available whereas 404 are much less so.

For me it's a no brainer. If you really want something in this caliber range then the 416 is the way to go if you want to be able to get ammo or components easily.

The 416 Rigby starting loads [ if you reload ] duplicate 404 Jeffrey max ballistics, it easily exceeds the 404 in ability to send heavier bullets faster.

Factory ammo in either is adequate for the purpose.

What ballistics do you want ?

Specifying the requirement in terms of ballistics avoids pointless emotional discussion around cartridges.

The .375 H&H Magnum will be your brother`s best option, 1.5-5x20 Leopold scope, 350-380 gn bullet for dangerous game hunt.

No need to go for a .40 caliber, there is a PH with a double .500 NE or .500 Jeffery behind you. Learn to shoot the .375 H&H Magnum from any position, learn to shoot it fast, re-load fast practice until it is an extension of your arm. Practice shot placement ....

You can still use the .375 H&H Magnum for plains game , just use a 270 gn Core-bonded bullet. If everyone is starting to shoot .40 caliber rifles , I am afraid it would not be long before the work of the PH would not be necessary...

    416. Good pre loved specimens can be found in the CZ variety between R15k and R20k.

If you own these .4 cartridges, you realy have to reload, becoming proficient on factory ammo can be expensive.

As for scopes, have a look at the Lynx LX 3 1-6x24. Have one on my 458 Lott and one hell of a scope at the price point.

    @ Sean Murphy

Thank you for your input. The more I read up and listen to advise the more it seems that the better option would be the .416
