    Default Scope service and repairs:

    Morning all,

I used to have my scopes (all types of "lesser" brands) serviced & repaired by Lynx but now they inform me that they will only work on their own branded units.

So as not to set the forum alight with a thousand comments of "you should only buy brands with support/service/trallala"....

Does anyone know of an optics company in Jhb/Pta area, that is willing to work on these lesser brands??
(the efficient corner-mechanic in other words..)

    Following this thread,

I have an old Bisley Deluxe spotting scope that I want to get serviced as well.

Have you possibly tried photographic camera repair people.
As scopes and Camera lenses could be similar in repairing. Except maybe for the Nitrogen fill on scopes.

Just make sure you get a firm quote first. The cost of repairs could easily be more than what it's worth; even the cost of the quote itself without repairs could be high (considering the value of the item). I learned that lesson with a pair of 'lesser' Bushnell binoculars a few years ago. It could be more cost effective just to get a replacement 'lesser' brand.

Good time to invest in the new Lynx LX3 range.
Recently got one. And they have incredible optics in.

B3 I'm under the impression that Arms in Pretoria services some scopes. I have no idea to what extent though
Perhaps give them a call if you can't get some one in Joburg

There is apparently an elderly Swiss/German/Austrian gentleman in Cape Town that does it. I'm told that he operates from a small camera repair shop off Kloof street but I don't have contact details & I'd have to drive around the area looking for it. Maybe someone else has better info?

Problem is you might pay +R1000 per hour for the work. If a skilled camera tech takes on the work.

Ive never had any of my scopes in 20 years serviced. I did damage a Lynx Professional I purchased in late 90's a while back by falling on it. Which went back to Lynx to fix.
But other then that havent seen the need for servicing a scope so far.
