    Default Advantage of +P+ ammo

Anyone here use +P+ ammo for their guns? What is the biggest advantage of +P+ ammo over +P ammo in SD situations (or regular ammo for that matter)?

I presume those who use it do not do so on a regular basis because of the extra wear on their guns.

Back in the olden days expansion relied on velocity.

The +p and +p+ generally ran faster so were expected to expand better.

These days expansion is better controlled.

According to Massad Ayoob 147gn 9mmP Rangers are comparable to high end .38 Special, 127gn +P+ to lightish .357 velocities and performance.

It depends more on the bullet design, construction and velocity actually achieved out of the gun than whether its +P+ loading or not.

Winchesters website has some stats on their expansion, penetration and weight retention through a variety of objects. I'm changing from 127 +P+ to 147 because they seem to terminally perform equivalently, but I can shoot the lower recoiling round with quicker splits.

very good question, what id like to know is what is the advantage of using +p+ 9MM FMJ ammunition as opposed to normal 9MM FMJ as the 9mm already has a reputation for over penetration.?

Some carbine/sub machine guns like hotter loads. Maybe that?

More powerful (hotter) FMJ will over penetrate more, wear out guns faster and recoil more. Wounding will be the same puncture wound as for regular FMJ. = No advantage.

More powerful (hotter) HP's will mostly expand more, they will also recoil more and they may expand too much, unless the manufacturer designed them to expand in a controlled way while staying together. And if they expand too much and lose fragments you may not have ideal depth penetration. = May have advantages but only if you use the premium stuff from the good companies...

makes sense, thank you for the reply.......rather stick to standard pressure then.
