Default Minimum Clearance Between Scope Objective And Barrel?

    Good day

Need some advise from the more experience.

I will be mounting a scope with a 56 mm objective with medium scope rings on a Howa 1500 ( 6.5x55 ) with a standard profile barrel. With a physical check the objective clears the barrel, but only by 2 mm. There is just the slightest bit of light visible between scope and barrel. While it is preferable to mount the scope as low as possible (given that eye relief, cheek weld etc, is a given), is there a minimum clearance between the scope objective and the barrel I should look for? Is this too close to the barrel? What should the ideal minimum clearance be? Or is current setup with a 2 mm clearance fine?

    Thanks

2 mm is fine IMHO, actually very nice.

On my 308 Rem I had my previous 6-24x42 scope sitting at 2mm about above barrel.
It was fine never had any issues with it.

When I changed over to the Lx3 lynx with 56mm obj I had to use 34mm rings.
Its now about 5mm above barrel.
If I go lower I will have issue with the bolt hitting Eyebell at rear. Otherwise I would have gone lower.

Ive heard guys say lower to barrel is better for closer ranges. up to 300m or so. Due to trajectory better. Higher apparently better for longer range trajectory. I can not confirm this. Just what ive heard.

Sales guy in shop did tell me that a little higher is better on large scopes. As you then wont pick up heat coming off barrel ant interfering with scope picture.
However ive never shot so much with a rifle that the barrel was hot enough to give this effect. So cant confirm this either. Might just have been sales talk.

Thanks for the input LoopSoosStroop and shooty.

Great I should be fine than with 2 mm clearance. @shooty, sales guy at shop mentioned as well about heat coming off barrel. Rifle will be used primarily for hunting up to 300 m, so not to concerned about heat build up on barrel.

Ah, now the bulb lights... You bought my Leopold PRW's right?

Wish I had 2 mm's, even with the low PRW's I'm still about 5 to 6 mm off the barrel with my Vortex 50 mm objective.

A low mounted scope just looks better as well.

I think I won't be able to slide a piece of A4 paper between my scope's objective and the barrel. Really nice and low. It's only a .22 though.
