Forgive me for i have sinned(bought 30-06, have 308)
I paid for a Tikka 30-06 this weekend, R4000 less normal retail.. I saw the price and made an impulse buy. I have been hunting for numerous years with my 308. I have till this weekend to decide what to do.
1.)Keep both. They so close ballistically so whats the use?
2.)Sell the 308, license the 30-06, buy 30-06 dies and rock on. Will be able to shoot heavier bullets faster. Does it matter in the field??
3.)Return the 30-06.
Seeing as its 2017, and logic trumps emotional decisions , what would you guys advise?

Keep both. Always good to have options. One for plains, one for bushveld.
Load one flat and fast, load the other slow and heavy. Have the 30-06 for when you are shooting something bigger.
I have a .308. Would happily have a 30-06 as well. Admittedly it is not my first choice for a second calibre, but you still can't go wrong. Enjoy them both!

Can't you swop the 30-06 for another caliber? What about a 270? Wouldn't that be a nice combo then?

I would keep the .308. Go swap the .30-06 for a .375 or a 6.5 of sorts.

As a 3006 owner, I would say have the 308 re-chambered to 260 Remington. Bit expensive, but would be oh so sweet!

Keep the 30-06, load it with 220gr bullets at about 2400 fps and shoot any non-dangerous game you want. Keep the 308, load it with 150gr at about 2800 fps and shoot any plains game you want.

Two sins I see could happen. 1. You get rid off the 308. Thats a big sin in it self. 2. Changing your mind on owning another firearm. Is also a sin.
They are in deed close.
But that has not stopped me so far from owning 5 x 22Lr's. LOL.

I see no erroneous decision here.
I see only benefits...
1. You could finally settle the .308 Win vs .30-06 debate for yourself - Educational experience
2. You will now need only one tin of propellant, one calibre bullet etc.. - Streamlined logistics
3. You will now start shooting more, shoot both rifles - Shooting Experience
4. You saved R4000 on the purchase - Sound Financial decision
