    Default Model 12 refurbishment

    Howzit

Trust this is the right place.

What would you do if this was yours and you had to refurbish it?

I was thinking of re-blueing the finish and sanding down the stock and give it either a very high gloss or a dark brown mat finish.

    Any ideas?

To me it looks fine as is. A fine old gun and some honest wear. Any work will destroy it's collector value

If you sand down stock and take out dents.
I would not re-varnish and make gloss.

    Rather oil. And leave matt.
To me that gives a better look to wood stocks then the varnished once.
I used Schaftoll dark and Danish oil on my stocks. Slightly darker wood looks nicer then light wood to me.
The light wood colors sometimes looks like cheaper wood to me. Looks cheaper not necessarily are cheaper wood.
The Danish oil goes into wood. And has a slight hardener in which strengthens the wood from inside.

That's what I'm scared of as well. But in all honesty. What collectors value will it have in SA? I'f noticed that they have more value in the USA

Agree 100% with the lighter color wood. And it is personal preference as you mentioned. Does not necessarily mean its not good wood.

Personally I appreciate a well used but looked after old gun much more than one that is refurbished for the sake of refurbishing.

If you are looking at refurbishing the stock go and look at the Vintage Guns website. Go to the information section and then look for Stock Finishing and they will tell how to go about it. The oil finish is awesome. Good luck

No it's an English site. I got the recipes for the different oils from them. Still trying to locate one of the ingredients.
